USA F1 Grand Prix Ceasar's Palace
CAESAR'S PALACE
Money and Formula One go together like duck to water, which is why the Grand Prix circus headed to Las Vegas after the contract to run the US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen had expired.
Onlt two F1 races were held at Las Vegas, in 1981 and 83, though two further non-championship events were held in 1983 and 84. After that, Las Vegas returned to its roots as America's leading holiday and gambling resort. The 2.2 mile circuit running in a counter-clockwise direction was built in Ceasars Palace car park and yet there was so much space available that most drivers said that despite the exhausting effect of the desert sun, they enjoyed the venue because it left them plenty of space for overtaking. For safety's sake, generous sand-filled run-off areas were provided to slow down cars unfortunate enough to slide off the mirror-like road surface. In fact, there was so little grip that watching the drivers battle with their sliding cars added considerably to the thrill of the event. And since spectators could get very close to the action, it was an unrivaled opportunity to catch the excitement of Formula One Grand Prix racing at close quarters. |
