Turkish Formula One Grand Prix
The Istanbul track that hosts the Turkish Grand Prix was designed, as were so many other modern Grand Prix circuits, by Herman Tike. As well as having numerous changes of elevation, the track mirrors some of the most famous corners from other tracks around the world but also it has one of its own hat presents a unique challenge to Grand Prix drivers, its simply called Turn 8 and it's a massively long left handed bend with four separate apexes, during which the cars are pulling up to 5G throughout the corner. This corner has, itself been replicated at the US Texas GP circuit.
This extremely challenging 3.3 mile sinuous circuit runs counter-clockwise, making it, along with Brazil and Singapore, the only current Grand Prix circuit to do so. Istanbul's four different gradient changes and successions of technical corners make it easy for a driver under pressure to make mistakes, though the start/finish straight, at almost half a mile in length permits speed of over 200mph to be reached. There's plenty of variation in the width of the track too, ranging from 18.5 to 26.5 yards, the circuit has in all, 14 challenging corners. |
