Lotus 79 - 1979
This is the Lotus 79 Formula One car that was driven by Mario Andretti in the 1979 Formula One Championship season, the second team driver that year was Carlos Reutemann, both drivers went on that season to score several podium finishes, and in the early stages of the season were in contention for victory, but ultimately in the second half of the season the cars rivals progressed and out-classed the Lotus.
The reason for the decline in the later half of the season was clear from the start, as the car was not even intended to race the 79 season!. This car was meant to be replaced at the start of the 1979 season with the Lotus 80, but unfortunately the 80 proved to be a total failure and Lotus were forced to go back to racing the Lotus 79 for the season. The team ended up finishing 4th in the constructors Championship and retired the Lotus 79 at the end of the season.
