USA Formula One Grand Prix
The United States Grand Prix was hosted three times on the streets of Phoenix, Arizona, between 1989 and 1991.
The biggest problem was faced by the drivers who had to contend with little grip, poor and inconsistent road surfaces, and a dull succession of blind 90-degree corners. Another problem was that the catch fencing required for safety was both ugly and very much restricted spectators views. Finally, the first Phoenix Grand Prix was held in the searing heat of American summer which not only took its toll on the drivers but also on the spectators, many of whom left early to seek cool refreshments and shelter from the blazing Arizona sun. The writing was on the wall , and after the 1991 GP, Formula One left the Phoenix Street Circuit for good. The Grand Prix was held in downtown Phoenix, its counter-clockwise circuit starting on Jefferson Street and taking in Monroe Street, Washington Street, 3rd Avenue, Adams Street, and 5th Avenue before a long double left-hand sequence to return to the start/finish straight. |
