Singapore Formula One Grand Prix
The 'new' Singapore Grand Prix was first held in 2008 on a 3.15 mile circuit created on public roads in the Marina Bay suburb of the city. Memorable for being held at night and under the bright lights, the race took place against a stunning vista of illuminated skyscrapers and provided a thrilling spectacle for all who watched it.
The Marina Bay Street Circuit is the result of a $150 million deal signed by the FIA, the Singapore government, and Singapore Telecommunications. Its run in a counter-clockwise direction on a circuit consisting of 10 right-hand and 14 left-hand turns. For the opening race in 2008, The lap times came down quickly as drivers first got used to the night-time conditions, but the use of hi-tech projectors to illuminate the track ensured that the race ran smoothly, despite a number of collisions against the high curbs found at Turn 10. In that race, which was eventually won by Fernando Alonso in a Renault, was a huge commercial success, with around 110'000 tickets sold and all of the corporate hospitality suites sold out. With the Malaysian Grand Prix only 180 miles away, they certainly love Formula One in this neck of the woods. |
