Initially the Tipo 179 had outboard rear brakes as well as modified rear suspension, improved aerodynamics, a stiffened monocoque, carbon fibre body panels and titanium key suspension parts.
Despite all the upgrades throughout the 1980 season for the Tipo 179, the car achieved little success, its best result being 5th place in Argentina and Germany when driven by Bruno Giacomelli.
